Middlesex House Of Corrections – Housing Expansion

MGA recently completed design phase geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering services for a new housing expansion at the Middlesex House of Corrections in Billerica, Massachusetts. Working with Symmes Maini & McKee Associates, MGA provided both geotechnical and geoenvironmental services for the new expansion.  Portions of the site were used as a former landfill and general waste characterization testing was necessary for soils within the proposed area of development that could require management on-site and/or shipment off site during construction.
 
To properly characterize the variable subsurface conditions, MGA observed a total of ten soil test borings and twenty five test pits performed on a 30 foot grid spacing across the site.  Recommendations for shallow spread footings with both slab-on-grade and structural slab construction were provided.
