The new US Armed Forces Reserve Center in Rutland, Vermont was completed in 2012. This design/build project consisted of six buildings, including a Training Building, an Organizational Maintenance Shop, and an Unheated Storage Building, as well as passenger and military equipment parking and stormwater management areas for the United States Army Reserve and Vermont National Guard. MGA worked closely with J&J Contractors and Symmes Maini & McKee Associates throughout the project to provide timely, economical, and technically appropriate geotechnical design and construction recommendations. The presence of shallow bedrock requiring blasting in portions of the site, a shallow groundwater table, and the silty nature of the on-site glacial till soils were primary earthwork construction issues. Working directly for the contractor, MGA’s presence on-site throughout earthwork construction helped increased the reusability of the on-site soils.
